Usually, when spring football practices come to an end with spring games, there is a Transfer Portal window that opens for a week. That has been the case in years past, but not this year after the NCAA tweaked the portal.
The winter portal was moved back to after the first of the year, although that doesn't stop players from opting out of bowl games that are not part of the 12-team College Football Playoff. That's still going to happen, along with players opting out for the NFL Draft from those same games. On Thursday, James Franklin talked about the lack of a spring portal and had an interesting quote.
"Yes, but there's also a bunch of coaches around the country who say, 'God, I wish I had the portal to be able to solve this problem that I then identified during spring ball.' So, don't get me wrong, I'd rather have it the way it is right now, but I do think there are some coaches who say the benefit of having the second portal is that you can go out and solve some problems. But you could also create some, too,'' said Franklin.
Some coaches were in favor of no spring portal while there were likely others who wanted to keep it. In the end, it's been scrapped and there is now just the one portal window in the winter. That puts more pressure on coaches to make the right decisions, as well as the players.
