It was a busy weekend in Blacksburg.

When new Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin was at Penn State, he picked up an early commitment in the Class of 2027 offensive tackle Layton von Brandt. He committed to Franklin and the Nittany Lions in November of 2024.

He kept his pledge to Penn State and Franklin until October, when Franklin was fired. After he was let go, von Brandt reopened his recruiting. He took a visit to Virginia Tech, and not surprisingly, the Hokies are very much in the mix for him.

von Brandt had an "eye-opening" trip to Blacksburg, and it would be surprising if Virginia Tech is in the mix right until the end. Matt Moore has done well in recruiting since he's been at Tech.

Softball sweeps NC State

One day after run-ruling North Carolina State to secure career win No. 300 for Virginia Tech softball coach Pete D'Amour, his Hokies were looking to complete the sweep on Sunday afternoon. After run-ruling the Wolfpack in their first two games, the third game came down to the end, literally.

Tied 1-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Hokies had runners at the corners with two outs when Michelle Chatfield stepped up and ripped an RBI single to left field for the 2-1 win and the three-game sweep of NC State. The Hokies opened the scoring in the second inning when Nora Abromavage homered. The Wolfpack tied the game in the third one an error.

Emma Mazzarone worked the first six innings, allowing just two hits and one run with nine strikeouts. Bree Carricoi worked the seventh inning, retiring the side and improve to 8-0 as the pitcher of record. Virginia Tech improved to 28-4 overall with a trip to Boston College next weekend for a three-game series.

Baseball walks off Duke in extras

After splitting the first two games of their home opening ACC series against Duke, the Hokies baseball team was looking for its first series win in conference play this season. They dropped two out of three in their first two series at Georgia Tech and Virginia.

Leading 6-4 through seven innings, Virginia Tech watched as the Blue Devils scored one run in the eighth and one in the ninth to force extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th and the bases loaded, Sam Grube singled to clinch the series for Tech.

Virginia Tech got home runs from Sam Gates and Ethan Bell, while Nick Locurto had a two-run single. Luke Craytor was the winning pitcher after allowing one hit and striking out two in 1.1 innings of relief. Griffin Stieg worked the first six innings for the Hokies, scattering six hits and allowing four runs and striking out four. Virginia Tech will travel to East Tennessee State on Tuesday for a non-conference game at 5.
