After spending what seemed like forever on the road, the Virginia Tech softball team returned to Blacksburg for its weekend series of the 2026 season. After dropping two out of three at Duke last weekend, the Hokies welcomed North Carolina State.
After winning the opener on Friday night, 10-0, in five innings, Virginia Tech was looking to clinch the series on Saturday afternoon. Things didn't start well as the Wolfpack erupted for three first-inning runs before the Hokies came to bat. However, Virginia Tech answered with a three-run frame of its own before posting a dramatic win.
Virginia Tech softball walks-off NC State for milestone win for Pete D'Amour
Leading NC State 10-3 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, Rachel Castine launched a solo home run down the left field to invoke the run-rule and give head coach Pete D'Amour his 300th career win at the helm of Virginia Tech.

The win improved to 27-4 on the season, and 3-2 in ACC play, with the series final coming on Sunday at noon. Incredibly, it took D'Amour just eight seasons to win 300 games in Blacksburg.
It was another game where the Hokies pounded out double-digit hits with 12. Castine led the way with three from the bottom of the order, and she drove in four runs. Jordan Lynch, Michelle Chatfield, and Nore Abromavage each had two. Abromavage drove in three runs on her two hits on the afternoon. Catcher Zoe Yeager had a two-run single, and Michelle Chatfield chipped in with an RBI single.
Sophie Kleiman started in the circle for the Hokies, but didn't record an out before D'Amour was forced to go to the bullpen, and Bree Carrico, who improved to 7-0 on the season, allowed just one hit, striking out six and walking just two.
