Virginia Tech Hokies News: Former recruit commits again, top 20 program, bowl games gone

When Brent Pry received a commitment from Class of 2027 quarterback Ben Musser, it was surprising and came out of nowhere on the Hokies' radar. Regardless, it was one of Pry's first commitments in the class.

When Pry was fired, and James Franklin was hired, it was clear that the former Nittany Lions head coach was going to go in a different direction. There was no attempt made to retain him, and he reopened his recruiting. The Georgia native committed and will play at Appalachian State in the Sun Belt Conference.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound athletic signal caller can affect a game with both his arm and his ability to scramble. Virginia Tech is going to be young in the QB room in 2026, and there likely wasn't going to be room for him down the line in Blacksburg.

Softball moves up inside Top 20 in polls

What a start to the season for the Hokies softball team. They won all five of their games last weekend at South Carolina, including beginning the weekend and ending the weekend with wins over the then-14th-ranked Gamecocks.

The perfect weekend moved Virginia Tech into the top 20 in this week's polls. This upcoming weekend, the Hokies will be tested in the Queen City Classic in Charlotte. Pete D'Amour's team will play two games against Villanova and Michigan State and one against Charlotte. MSU is coming off winning four of its first five games of the season last weekend, including taking down No. 13 Clemson.

Another bowl game canceled

Hopefully, with James Franklin on board, the Hokies football team will return to bowl games beginning in 2026, or heck, how about the College Football Playoff? If they become bowl-eligible, there are going to be three fewer bowls beginning next season.

Detroit's GameAbove Sports Bowl, which was also called the Quick Lane, Little Caesars, and Motor City Bowls, has been canceled. It joins the Bahamas Bowl and the Los Angeles Bowl as bowls that were played for the final time this past season.
