Going into August, the Virginia Tech football team had just nine commitments in the Class of 2026, but they were lacking commitments at key positions. The Hokies were lacking a quarterback, which is something they might be able to get away with incoming freshmen Kelden Ryan and A.J. Brand in camp now from the Class of 2025. Both have promising futures.
The Hokies Class of 2026 is going to end up being what it is when all is said and done, but they got a good star with the Class of 2027, picking up their first commitment, quarterback Ben Musser, who committed to Virginia Tech on Friday.
Virginia Tech picks up commitment from Class of 2027 QB Ben Musser
During Virginia Tech's final camp in June, Musser threw for the Hokies and impressed so much that he walked away with an offer. On Friday, he became first-year offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery's first QB commit at Virginia Tech. Musser, from Bogart, Georgia, picked the Hokies over Vanderbilt, Cincinnati, and Purdue.
A rising junior, Musser combined for nearly 2,200 total yards of offense last fall, throwing for nearly 1,400 yards and 15 touchdowns for Prince Avenue Christian School, and rushing for just under 800. His ability to throw the run should work well in Montgomery's offense, which likes to move the quarterbacks around.
According to 247Sports rankings, Musser is the 22nd-ranked quarterback in the Class of 2027, and truth be told, this is a very good start to recruiting in the class. Early commitments like this can change at the drop of a dime in this day and age of recruiting, but getting a commitment from Mussr just five weeks after getting an offer is a good sign for Virginia Tech.
It's also good to get a QB commitment early for other offensive players who are considering Tech, as visits will begin shortly once the 2025 season begins and Virginia Tech plays seven games inside Lane Stadium this year, which presents plenty of opportunities for recruiting visits.
