The Virginia Tech softball team opened the 2026 season on Thursday night with a come-from-behind victory over 14th-ranked South Carolina with a seven-run sixth inning in an 8-4 win. The 21st-ranked Hokies swept a doubleheader against Winthrop and Binghamton on Friday. On Saturday, the Hokies again had a pair of games and again rallied to take down the Gamecocks in another come-from-behind win.
Trailing 4-0 after two innings on Saturday night, the Hokies rallied with five runs in the top of the fifth and never trailed again in an 8-5 win to improve to 5-0 on the season. Getting a win to open the season on Thursday night was a massive win, but to basically sweep the weekend and beat the Gamecocks twice will open some eyes early in the season.
Five-run third lifts Virginia Tech softball to come-from-behind win over South Carolina
As usual, the Hokies used the long ball to rally as Zoe Yaeger had a two-run shot in the third, and that was followed by a solo shot from Michelle Chatfield. Emma Mazzarone had a two-run single later in the inning, and Addison Foster gave Virginia Tech the lead with an RBI single.
South Carolina cut the deficit to 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth, but Annika Rohs had a clutch two-out RBI double in the top of the seventh to regain a three-run lead for the Hokies.
Earlier in the day, the Hokies fell behind Binghamton 3-0 in the top of the third, but rallied with 11 runs to win, 11-3, in a game that was cut short by the run rule in the bottom of the sixth. Once again, it was the home run ball that got Virginia Tech going, with Nora Abromavage hitting two, including a grand slam, and she finished with six RBIs.
Virginia Tech will hit the road again next weekend to Charlotte to take part in the Queen City Classic for five more games beginning on Friday. They will play two games against Michigan State and Villanova and one against Charlotte.
