Filling holes left vacated in the wide receiver room this off-season was a top priority for Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry and new offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery. The Hokies lost a ton of talent to the NFL with Stephen Gosnell, Da’Quan Felton, Jaylin Lane, and Ali Jennings all getting a chance to make an NFL roster next fall.
That is a ton of production that needs to be replaced by Virginia Tech for quarterback Kyron Drones and Pop Watson. When healthy, that group was able to make plays all over the field for the Hokies, and some were game-changing. You don’t appreciate what you have until it’s gone.
In the winter transfer portal, Virginia Tech got commitments from Tennessee transfer Cameron Seldon and Wake Forest’s Donovan Greene. Seldon was someone who impressed during spring practices and in the Spring Game. He is someone who is in line for a big 2025 campaign. On Sunday night, the Hokies picked up another portal commitment, and this one is one that fans should not sleep on next fall.
Jackson State transfer Isaiah Spencer is a player that fans shouldn’t sleep on
When the Hokies got a commitment from Jackson State wide receiver Isaiah Spencer, they are getting an FCS receiver who has play-making ability and can be a huge addition to the receiving core for Montgomery. This past season, he hauled in 35 receptions for 660 yards and four touchdowns for the Tigers.
Spencer will step in and give Drones a potential big-play option downfield who can gain separation from his defender quickly. The wide receiver room suddenly becomes interesting for the Hokies with Aiden Green returning and some younger receivers looking to earn some playign time in camp this summer. Spencer is a player that Virginia Tech fans should not sleep on, and he could quickly become a fan favorite.
