One position grouping that was hit hard following the 2024 season was the wide receiver room for Virginia Tech. Gone to the NFL are Da'Quan Felton, Jaylin Lane, Stephen Gosnell and Ali Jennings. It was a deep and talented room for the Hokies and there are some young talented players returning for new offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery.
If there was a position of need for both the winter and spring transfer portal cycles for the Hokies, it was at wide receiver for quarterbacks Kyron Drones and Pop Watson. Virginia Tech had already gotten commitments from Tennessee transfer Cameron Seldon and Donavon Greene from Wake Forest over the winter portal window.
Finding at least one more wide receiver in the spring portal was necessary, and on Sunday night, Virginia Tech for that commitment from Jackson State receiver Isaiah Spencer.
Virginia Tech football gets portal commitment from Jackson State wide receiver Isaiah Spencer
According to 247Sports, Spencer took a visit to Virginia Tech on Thursday and Friday and just two days later, he committed to the Hokies. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Mississippi native had 35 catches last season for 660 yards and four touchdowns. In 25 games for Jackson State, he had 59 receptions for 867 yards and five touchdowns.

Spencer's commitment gives the Hokies an experienced receiver to bring in for the 2025 season, and the sophomore has good speed and is someone who can make plays in the open field. He also returned kicks on both kickoffs and punts for Jackson State. He picked Virginia Tech over ACC member California, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Washington State.
There are still going to be questions facing the Hokies wide receivers going into summer camp, but Seldon was impressive in the spring and Greene is someone who brings experience. The Hokies' wide receiver position got better on Sunday night.
