After three frustrating weeks to open the season, which got head coach Brent Pry fired, the Virginia Tech football team picked up its first win of the season with a 38-6 rout of FCS Wofford at Lane Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In what was a four-quarter effort against a team that was struggling a lot more than the Hokies, if that's possible, and they did what they needed to ahead of ACC play beginning next weekend at North Carolina State. It's time for the latest report card for Virginia Tech against Wofford.

Offense: A-

Quarterback Kyron Droens had a big afternoon, throwing for over 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns while also rushing for two in the second half. He took what the Terriers' defense gave him, he took the checkdowns instead of forcing things downfield, and he also had a fumble in Hokies territory that didn't hurt.

Virginia Tech's offensive line took advantage of being the bigger line and opening holes for the running backs, and the wide receivers made some plays for Drones. For one afternoon, it felt good to watch.

Defense: A

The Hokies' defense dominated the undermanned Terriers to the tune of allowing just 141 yards, 142 through the air, and minus-1 rushing. Virginia Tech recorded four sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and Kemari Copeland had an interception. It was nice to see some of the second and third stringers get some action in the game toward the end.

Special Teams: A-

John Love missed a field goal at the end of the first half from nearly 60 yards, and there were some penalties on punt returns, but other than that, it was a clean day for the Hokies' special teams. Again, this has been an area that has struggled this year, but other than the Love miss and penalties, it was a clean game for the most part.

Coaching: A-

Philip Montgomery had Virginia Tech ready to go, and other than not converting a fourth down early in the game inside the red zone, it was a good game in terms of play-calling and Drones executing by going to check downs. Defensively, Virginia Tech got after the Terriers, and the numbers speak for themselves. Montgomery got a full 60-minute effort from his team.

Overall: A

In the overall big picture, Virginia Tech did what they needed to, they showed up, played 60 minutes and rolled over a team that they should have. They beat an FCS team in the manner that they should have now; the real work begins for Montgomery and the staff with ACC play opening next Saturday night at NC State. Just what the roster will look like for next week and the rest of the season remains to be seen, with more players potentially entering the portal this week. Buckle up.
