After Virginia Tech fired Brent Pry following last Saturday night's 45-26 loss to Old Dominion, the next question was, at 0-3, how were the Hokies going to respond under interim coach Philip Montgomery against Wofford at Lane Stadium on Saturday? If they were going to win, they were going to have to do it without key players, Caleb Woodson, Quentin Reddish, Sherrod Covil, Christian Ellis, Caleb Brown and Takye Heath. There were also missing Dante Lovett who enter the Transfer Portal earlier this week.
Facing a Terriers' team also 0-3, Virginia Tech did what Virginia Tech should have done; the Hokies came out and dominated their FCS opponent to the tune of a 38-6 victory. Wrapping up non-conference play with a win, quarterback Kyron Drones had the offense moving the ball ahead of ACC play beginning next week at North Carolina State.
Virginia Tech beat Wofford for first win of 2025
Let the speculation begin, as was this more of Virginia Tech playing well, or the Hokies playing an opponent struggling as badly as they have from the FCS? Probably a mixture of both if we're being honest, but for one, savor the effort and result as there may not be many of them like this in 2025.
Drones was 15-for-18 in the first half for 182 yards through the air and touchdown passes to Ayden Greene and Devin Alves. Coastal Carolina transfer Braydon Bennett opened the scoring with a first-quarter touchdown run as the Hokies led 38-6 into halftime. Virginia Tech rushed for 91 yards against the Terriers in the opening half. On the flip side, the defense shut down Wofford, except for a field goal, and Kemari Copeland had an interception after a Drones fumble deep in their own territory.

Drones finished 27-for-32 for 307 yards through the air and a pair of touchdowns, and capped off his afternoon with a pair of rushing touchdowns late in the third and fourth quarters for a 38-6 lead.
For one week, everything is well with the Virginia Tech program after getting their first win of the season, something we may not be saying too much more of in 2025, but for one week, they looked like a team that competed and competed hard for 60 minutes, not something you could say for the first three weeks of the season.
