The Virginia Tech football team will kick off spring practices on Wednesday with a ton of questions compared to last season at this time. Head coach Brent Pry gave some updates the day before his Hokies hit the field and the most promising one was on quarterback Kyron Drones, who missed three of the last four games last fall with an injury.
"He looks back to form," said Pry. "These winter workouts, we do a lot of competitions and he was very tough to beat. It didn't matter who I put him against. Sled, push, agility drills, we challenged him each and every morning and he was hard to beat. He's one of our best workers. I think he's back in form, I think he's confident again, largely because he's healthy."
That's great news as when it was announced back in December that he would be returning along with Pop Watson, that gives the Hokies two experienced singal callers which is big with some young and inexperienced skilled position players around them. New offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery is hoping to get the best out of Drones this season.
Virginia Tech dealing with a lot of injuries heading into the spring
This season there expects to be some young players looking to crack the lineup for the Hokies and some of them are going to miss all of spring practices with injuries, including redshirt freshman wide receiver Keylen Adams and redshirt freshman linebacker Gabriel Williams. Both players have a real shot to make an impact in 2025.
Incoming freshman running back Jeff Overton from Alexandria will also miss spring practices with an injury. He is someone who the coaching staff is high on this season as they expressed during early signing day back in December. With openings at the running back spot, missing spring practices will be tough for Overton.
Brent Pry likes the Spring Game
One topic that has been talked a lot about the last couple of months has been Spring Games and some schools who have decided to cancel them. Some schools are going about it a different way and Clemson will play their game, they just won't have it televised. Pry spoke about the Spring Game and did so in the third person.
"I like the current model. Here at Virginia Tech and for Brent Pry, the traditional spring practice is what works here, works for us. It's a valuable experience for us."
You can't say that Brent Pry doesn't understand things as Virginia Tech fans look forward to the Spring Game each year. Here's hoping that things don't change anytime soon as it is always something fun to look forward to in mid-April.
