After going on a serious recruiting heater in May and early June, things quieted down for James Franklin at Virginia Tech. However, he picked up a commitment from three-star athlete Tyson Washington. The Springfield, Virginia, native was the 26th pledge to the Class of 2027 for James Franklin.
However, between the middle of the month and Washington's commitment, it was a string of losses on the recruiting trail for Franklin and Virginia Tech. Mike Norvell, of all schools, and Florida State picked up two commitments, and the Hokies, while Josh Heupel and Tennessee swooped in and landed a commitment from Virginia.
Overall, recruiting losses are going to happen. However, it's rare that a player commits to another program, in this case FSU, and praises the heck out of one of the coaches who he decided not to play for. Maybe a sign of things to come at some point with the Transfer Portal? Time will tell.
Virginia Tech flips Notre Dame commit
Linebacker was and is still a dire position of need for the Hokies in the Class of 2027, and one way to address it is by getting a flip. That was what happened in June for Franklin and defensive coordinator Brent Pry.
On June 15, word officially broke that four-star Amarri Irvin flipped his commitment from the Irish to the Hokies. Given the lack of additions to the class at this position, this was a huge under-the-radar move for Franklin and Pry.
Former Hokies standout Logan Thomas named to Virginia Tech Hall of Fame
When it comes to top quarterbacks in Virginia Tech history, Michael Vick's name always comes up first. However, another name that should be near the top is Logan Thomas. His numbers were something else and it has gotten him into the school's Hall of Fame.
On Monday, Virginia Tech announced one coach and six athletes in the Class of 2026 Hall of Fame, and Thomas was one of them. He still holds program records for starts by a signal caller with 40, 10,362 total yards of offense, 9,003 career passing yards, and 24 rushing touchdowns for a quarterback. He was a fourth-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2014. He converted from a QB to a tight end in the NFL, where he had 16 touchdowns.
