Over the last week, there were rumors swirling that Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin and defensive coordinator Brent Pry were looking to flip a Notre Dame commit at a position of dire need in the Class of 2027.
Virginia Tech entered Monday morning with 24 commits despite losing out on three commitments to some SEC and ACC schools over the weekend. On Monday, what had been rumored for a week behind the scenes became reality when Franklin, Pry, and the Hokies pulled off a huge flip.
Notre Dame commit Amarri Irvin flips to Virginia Tech
Franklin and Pry picked up their first linebacker commit in the Class of 2027 on Monday, when three-star Amarri Irvin flipped his commitment from the Irish to the Hokies. Irvin attended Woodward Academy in Georgia with current Virginia Tech 2027 commit, cornerback Bryce Woods. The duo reportedly caught up with each other last weekend during Irvin's visit.
Irvin ended up with a rather big list of offers, just over two dozen. Despite committing to Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Texas were also in the mix for him. In the end, it was the Hokies who secured his commitment on the flip.
Irvin has transferred to IMG Academy in Florida, and he was a vital pickup for Virginia Tech. As mentioned above, the Hokies did not have a true linebacker in the class committed, and Irvin is the first. Last week, the Hokies picked up a commitment from Turmarian Moreland from Florida, who is listed as a cornerback, but Pry and the Hokies see him playing the star position, which involves a hybrid role of linebacker and cornerback.
Securing the first true linebacker commit in the class is huge for Franklin and the Hokies, but there is still more work that needs to be done at the position before the prospect pool in the class dries out.
