Recruiting visits are done for members of the Class of 2027 as the Dead Period begins. Despite the visits ending, that doesn't mean the commits will stop. However, after going on a heater over the last month-plus, James Franklin and Virginia Tech have struggled a bit.

The Hokies entered Sunday with two dozen commits in the class secured, and their recruiting ranking is hovering around the Top 10 with 247Sports. However, it has been quiet recently in terms of commitments. That changed on Sunday when Franklin and the Hokies picked up a commitment from the Commonwealth, and they beat some big programs for the commitment.

Virginia Tech football picks up commitment from three-star Class of 2027 athlete

Three-star athlete Tyson Washington from Springfield, Virginia, committed to Virginia Tech on Sunday night over Virginia, Penn State, and Syracuse. Beating out two ACC schools is a nice victory for Franklin and Virginia Tech, but you can bet that after Franklin stuffed Matt Campbell into a locker for his recruitment, Penn State fans will tell you they didn't want him.

Washington visited his finalists over the last month-plus, and his final stop was at Virginia Tech. When he gets to Blacksburg, the Hokies are planning on using him at the Star position with the intention of transitioning him to a full-time linebacker. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder would be filling a position of need in the class at linebacker. It's a position that is a dire need that remains for Franklin, Brent Pry, and Virginia Tech.

There have been several linebackers who have been on Virginia Tech's radar this recruiting cycle, but they have struggled to get some commitments. Washington is someone who could grow into the position in Blacksburg, but it remains to be seen whether he would be at the star spot or land at another position. Don't underestimate picking up a commitment from the state of Virginia, something that Franklin is looking to get more of over the coming years.
