Virginia Tech football learns 2027 ACC opponents as conference scheduling remains a mess

For the first time this season, some ACC teams are playing nine conference games some are only playing eight. If a school is playing two Power 4 non-conference opponents this season, those teams are only playing eight ACC games. Teams like Virginia Tech, who are only playing one this upcoming weekend at Maryland, are playing nine.

However, next season, the number of ACC schools playing nine conference games is 16, with only Clemson playing eight. As far as the Hokies go, they got their ACC opponents for the 2027 season on Wednesday, with the home and away games broken down.

Virginia Tech learns 2027 ACC opponents

Next season, the Hokies will play non-conference home games against The Citadel and Liberty in the first two weeks, with a trip to Notre Dame in early November. As far as the ACC games go, five will be in Blacksburg against Clemson, Miami, North Carolina State, Syracuse, and Wake Forest. The four away games are Georgia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina, and Virginia.

That is an interesting slate. Obviously, this season needs to play out, and then the Transfer Portal and coaching changes, among other things, need to play out, but Franklin is getting what he asked for earlier this month: at least seven home games, and expect that to be as close to the norm moving forward with future Virginia Tech schedules during his tenure.

There are going to be two repeat conference foes, other than Miami and Virginia, next season from this season's slate: Clemson and Georgia Tech. As far as UNC goes, will Bill Belichick still be the coach in Chapel Hill next fall when the Hokies visit, and will Dabo Swinney still be at Clemson when the Tigers visit? In this day and age of college football, nothing is out of the realm of possibility.

As far as the rest of the conference goes, Clemson only playing eight conference games while everyone is playing nine makes it somewhat of a joke. There has been enough time, with the new standard set by Jim Phillips, to get it worked out so that all teams play nine games across the board. It's understandable for this year, but after one year, it should be an even playing field across the board.

Clemson's four home games next season? Boston College, Florida State, Stanford, and Wake Forest. Not exactly a powerhouse schedule there. Their four road games are Louisville, NC State, SMU, and Virginia Tech. That's a tougher path.

The 2026 season needs to be played out, and a conference champion needs to be crowned before we can look ahead to 2027. However, leave it to the ACC to have an unbalanced playing field for one school.
