It is officially game week for the Virginia Tech football team and first-year head coach James Franklin, but the ACC had some teams kick off their season this past weekend in Week 0. There was a lot of criticism of the conference going into the weekend, but for one weekend, the ACC made an early-season statement.
It started with North Carolina upsetting TCU, 15-10, in Ireland as Bill Belichick got some revenge for last season's 48-14 loss to the Horned Frogs. Just how good is UNC going to be this season? That remains to be seen, but with a difficult schedule ahead, if the Tar Heels are going to rebound from a 4-8 season, they needed to win in Dublin.
Virginia opened the season with a 34-8 rout of North Carolina State in Charlottesville. Tony Elliott and the Cavaliers picked up where they left off after last season's 11-win campaign. Is it finally time to have the conversation about Dave Doeren in Raleigh? It just might be.
Mike Norvell might be in the hottest seat in the ACC entering the season, and he really didn't do much to put that fire out. The Seminoles' season-opening 34-17 win over New Mexico State, after entering the game as a four-plus-touchdown favorite, will not sit well with the fanbase. Stanford opened the season with a 37-27 win over Hawai'i at home. The Cardinal nearly blew a 23-7 fourth-quarter lead before Hawai'i took a brief 27-23 lead with under five minutes left.
VMI opens the season with a loss
This might be the Hokies' season opener when VMI visits on Saturday night, but the Keydets began their season this past Saturday night with a 38-10 loss at Idaho State. Virginia Tech is just over a seven-touchdown favorite against VMI, and it should be a game where a ton of players get an opportunity to show what they can and have Franklin go very deep into the depth chart.

- The Hokies volleyball team rebounded from a disappointing split last Friday in the first day of the 2026 Hokie Invitational to salvage the weekend with a 3-1 win over Coppin State. Virginia Tech split the first day against Kent State and William & Mary. The Hokies will be on the road this Thursday and Friday in the Winthrop Invitational. They will take on the hosts at 6 on Thursday and Old Dominion at 6 on Friday.
- The Hokies women's soccer team pulled off a top-25 upset on Sunday with a 2-1 win at Georgetown. A first-half goal from Gabby Ciocca and a second-half strike from Eliana Salama were the difference. Virginia Tech is 4-0-2 and will travel to Penn State on Thursday night at 7:30.
