It’s the Commonwealth Cup, and the Virginia Tech Hokies host the Virginia Cavaliers. The winner goes to a bowl, and the loser goes home. At first look, the Hokies faithful have packed Lane Stadium, and we were off to a good start. The Hokies received the opening kickoff and started a profitable drive. The Hokies marched it down the field, and ended with a beautiful run by Bhayshul Tuten for 6 yards and a touchdown and the Hokies led 7-0.
After a quick punt and grab, the Hokies got more points. John Love capped a drive with a field goal, and the Hokies were up 10-0 late in the first quarter. After a couple of punts and goes, here we are. The Hokies punted again, but the Cavaliers found themselves in a position to score but had to settle for a field goal to cut the deficit to 10-3.
The Hokies' start of possession, THEY GAVE IT BACK. Pop Watson nailed a 66-yard wide-open pass to Jaylin Lane, but the Hokies were in charge for a 17-3 lead.
Virginia was driving late in the second quarter when Jaylen Jones picked off Cavaliers' quarterback Tony Muskett and returned into plus territory. Pop Watson led a charge, and they cashed a personal foul against Virginia, and John Love hit another field goal as time expired in the half for a 20-3 lead.
This season has been a struggle for the Hokies in the second half, but in order to get to bowl eligibility, then need to finish strong and by doing that, they need another god 30 minutes.
