Through the first week and a half of the 2024 winter transfer portal, things have been quiet on the Virginia Tech front in terms of getting commitments. As far as players going out, it's been very busy and it is forcing head coach Brent Pry and his staff to scramble to fill out a roster for the 2025 season.
On defense, the Hokies have lost two very big and key pieces in the secondary, Mansoor Delane and Mose Phillips. Delane entered the portal rather than declaring for the NFL Draft and as expected, he drew some interest right away and committed to LSU. Phillips was a huge bright spot for the Hokies this season and made some big plays. However, he to entered the portal and will look for a new home next season.
Those voids leave a thin secondary for Virginia Tech for the Duke's Mayo Bowl on Jan. 3 against Minnesota in Charlotte. It will allow some of the younger players to play and gain some valuable experience against a good Golden Gophers team. Looking to fill a need for next season, Pry and his staff have hosted some potential fits and on Wednesday, they got a commitment from a player who is transferring from an ACC rival.
Clemson safety Sherrod Covil, Jr. commits to Virginia Tech
Earlier this week, Virginia Tech hosted Clemson transfer Sherrod Covil, Jr. and the former Tigers safety is a huge addition for next season. This season, the Chesapeake native played in 11 games for Clemson, starting one, and had 12 tackles, nine solo. In his three years with Clemson, he had 36 tackles in 32 games played.
Virginia Tech's roster in general will need some additions for next season and some big ones. Landing Covil, Jr. is a nice start and a good first commitment for next season.
