Virginia Tech Football: Bowl Game In Jeopardy for the Hokies
By Roy Hatfield
Remember when the Hokies were mentioned to be a dark horse team for the 12-team playoff? Fighting Gobbler remembers. Remember when this was supposed to be the breakthrough year for Brent Pry and meet expectations? The fan base remembers. To quote Tony Soprano, “Remember when is the lowest form of conversation.”
Well, here we are sports fans. This has been a head-shaking, hand-wringing season. The Hokies have looked unbeatable, and at times, embarrassing. It is hard to fathom that at this point of the season, the Hokies aren’t even bowl-eligible. Forget the ACC title game in 2024. Cue the Jim Mora playoff rant, and I won’t sully the good name of the 12-team playoff by even whispering Virginia Tech at this point.
Bad news alert: Virginia Tech will lose to Clemson. Virginia Tech will probably lose to Duke. It’s going to take a final week victory versus Virginia to get Tech into a lower tier bowl game. Maybe.
In case you missed it, the Cavaliers aren’t your dad’s Wahoos and they will certainly give 110% to keep the Hokies out of ANY bowl game following the 2024 campaign. I don’t like the Hokies' chances against Duke, because the Devils do everything consistently that the Hokies struggle against. Who knows, maybe, just maybe, the game Thanksgiving Weekend could be a pair of 5-6 teams battling to become bowl-eligible. Oh, the drama we could see in Blacksburg that Saturday. Buckle up.
To be honest, I think Manny Diaz has the Blue Devils ahead of schedule and has been competitive in all the ball games I have been able to watch. If Virginia Tech has any plans over the holiday season it is likely to be a lower-tier game, but at this point, we will take it, like the Military Bowl last season.
