When a team becomes bowl-eligible, the month of December generally goes by quickly. With the transfer portal opening to prepare for the bowl game. The latter was not the case for Virginia Tech this season after they accepted a bid to the Duke's Mayo Bowl on Jan. 3 against Minnesota.

It was far from a quiet month for Brent Pry and Virginia Tech where tough decisions were made a some players entered the portal to find new homes for 2025. With all that said, here are three things we learned in the month of December for the Hokies.

Brent Pry makes coaching changes

If one thing was clear after Pry met with the media on signing day earlier in December, it's that he was not planning on making any coaching changes. A few days later, AD Whit Babcock gave his head coach a vote of confidence but said that when the two were going to meet, things were going to be discussed and everything was going to be on the table. Clearly, he was serious.

In the end, Pry ended up firing three assistant coaches, including defensive coordinator Chris Marve and offensive line coach Ron Crook. A couple of weeks after firing Crook, Pry hired West Virginia coach Matt Moore to rebuild and strengthen the line issues. He has already made a big impact with Tomas Rimac and Kyle Altuner joining the Hokies through the portal.
