Two weeks ago, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry fired a trio of assistant coaches. Defensive coordinator Chris Marve, offensive line coach Ron Crook and strength coach Dwight Galt IV were all let go. Marve and Crook were the two names that we were not surprising after the seasons both of their units had in 2024.
After a season that was full of disappointment, you have to think that Pry is making changes because his seat is getting hotter. With his struggles with in-game management and five one-score losses combined with a 1-12 record in one-score games, his margin for error could be shrinking. After firing three assistant coaches, the former Penn State defensive coordinator needs to his next hires correct. Monday, he officially hired an offensive line coach away from a Big 12 school.
Virginia Tech hires Matt Moore as OL coach
Virginia Tech hired West Virginia offensive line coach Matt Moore to replace Crook and at first look, this feels like a strong hire by Pry. Moore has had a ton of success in Morgantown and has 19 years of coaching in Division 1. He has produced some NFL players under his watch.
“I am thrilled to add Matt Moore to our staff,” Pry said in a press release. “He brings extensive experience coaching offensive lines at the Power Four level. His proven ability to develop strong, tough offensive line units that play with exceptional physicality will be a tremendous asset to our program. His leadership and expertise align perfectly with our vision for Virginia Tech football.”
The Hokies are going to need his extensive experience as the offensive line was a major issue for the Hokies the last two years. Moore's job will be to rebuild a line that is losing players to the transfer portal and players who have run out of eligibility. Adding players through the portal is almost a must and putting together a line to protect returning quarterbacks Kyron Drones and Pop Watson is a must. Don't be surprised to see some of Moore's players at West Virginia follow him to Blacksburg.
This hire feels like a strong and that is what Pry needs with his seat getting hot in 2025. Moore's track record says that this is a major upgrade and at this point, fans should be excited about the hiring. Now the next step is giving him some players to develop as soon as possible.
