There is no question that the 2025 season is a vital one for the Virginia Tech football team and head coach Brent Pry. After a pair of 6-6 regular seasons and just one year removed from a disappointing 2024 season that began with so much hope and hype, Virginia Tech now looks ahead to 2025 with a lot of changes to the roster and coaching staff.
Pry brings in two new coordinators and a new offensive line coach, while there was some big roster turnover between the Transfer Portal and the NFL Draft. Looking for new leaders in 2025, the program announced the five captains for the upcoming season and what they hope will be a bounce-back season in Blacksburg.
Virginia Tech football releases 2025 captains
On their program X account, Virginia Tech named their five captains for the season with quarterback Kyron Drones, tight end Benji Gosnell, defensive lineman Kelvin Gilliam, linebacker Caleb Woodson, and kicker John Love.

These are five outstanding choices for captains, with Drones already taking on that role in the offseason and early in camp. He is looking to bounce back from an injury-filled 2024 season that saw him miss four of the final five games, including the Duke's Mayo Bowl loss to Minnesota.
Gosnell figures to be a big focal point of the offense this season under first-year offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery and a key target for Drones. Love is one of the better, if not the best kicker, in the ACC with an explosive leg, which we saw on the final play of the first half of the bowl game against the Golden Gophers when he calmly drilled a 60-yard field goal in less-than-ideal weather conditions in Charlotte.
Gilliam has some big shoes to fill along the defensive line as a starter this year, with the players lost, and Woodson headlines a very strong linebacking core with Jaden Keller. Five very good selections for the Hokies for leaders in 2025.
