Down 21-7 with a minute left in the first half, the Virginia Tech football team couldn't simply run out the clock with Minnesota having three timeouts left. After picking up a first down, quarterback Pop Watson dropped back and found Ayden Greene at the Gophers 43 yard line with four seconds left.

Head coach Brent Pry took a timeout and called on kicker John Love. He lined up for a 60-yard field goal attempt and with the wind at his back, why not? Love already had a 57-yarder earlier this season in a loss at Miami so what's three more yards, right?

It didn't matter for Love as the sophomore drilled a 60-yard field goal that just cleared the bar to end the half with the Hokies trailing, 21-10, in the Duke's Mayo Bowl.

Love has a big leg and he fell one yard short of a school record with the kick, however, the kick was good enough to set a Duke's Mayo Bowl record. No Virginia Tech fan should be surprised that he attempted the kick, but also that he made it. Did he barely make it? Yes, but there are no style points needed.

Kolby Crawford of 247Sports was on the field at Bank of America Stadium and got great video of the kick and it clearly tells you just by how much he had the kick by, which is even more impressive.

Down a number of regulars to opt-outs, the Hokies have a lot of work to do in the second half if they are going to come back, but Love gave them momentum going into halftime.
