Once the Virginia Tech football program fired Brent Pry, it opened a 30-day Transfer Portal window with the opportunity to redshirt this year since four games were not played.
Dante Lovett took advantage of the opportunity and entered the portal one day after Pry was fired, and this week, with a roster in flux, there have been more changes, with three more players leaving the program on Friday after Tucker Holloway left on Thursday.
Virginia Tech loses three players from current roster
Over the offseason, Virginia Tech picked up a Transfer Portal commitment from Michael Short from North Carolina. The 6-foot-3, 226-pound linebacker played in the first four games for the Hokies with 25 tackles and a sack. On Friday, he announced that he was entering the portal.
Then, later Friday afternoon, VTScoop reported that Eastern Michigan transfer James Djonkam and Keyshawn Burgos were no longer listed on the Virginia Tech roster. All three are defensive players, which makes the unit a lot thinner and will force a lot more young guys into action in the next couple of months.
On Thursday night, Virginia Tech released its first availability report of the season, a move the ACC is implementing this year, and it was littered with several players who have been ruled out. Some are out due to injuries, and reading between the lines, it's likely that some are out because they are making decisions about their future in Blacksburg.
Interim coach Philip Montgomery did not release a depth chart this week for the reason of what happened on Friday when three players left the program. Short played in the first four games this year and last week against Wofford.
Now, with ACC play beginning on Saturday night in Raleigh against North Carolina State, and for the rest of the season, the roster will be thinner, and younger guys will get some valuable experience.
