After beginning the season with wins at home over VMI and Old Dominion, the Virginia Tech football team hits the road for its first road game of the 2026 season under James Franklin. It'll be a short trip up to College Park and a showdown with Maryland.

There was a lot of bulletin board material supplied this week, none bigger than Hokies cornerback Jaquez White and his comment on Maryland QB Malik Washington. On Wednesday, Franklin appeared to do some damage control when he talked up Washington and the job facing his defense this weekend.

As far as the line goes, it's down to 2.5 after beginning at 3 points over the weekend. It's not surprising that the line is slowly moving in favor of the Terrapins as this article is being written, and expect it to be a little lower by the time kickoff arrives. It will be a sellout crowd when the Hokies arrive, and this game will come down to a couple of areas.
Can Virginia Tech's offensive line hold up against Maryland's talented defensive line? Can the Hokies get the running game going better than they have in their first two games? Will Ethan Grunkemeyer be able to get the ball downfield and allow his wide receivers to make plays?
On the defensive side of the ball, can Virginia Tech's defense produce some turnovers and keep Washington in the pocket? It's his ability to scramble and pick up yards rushing, as well as his ability to scramble to keep plays alive and throw the ball downfield. Expect White to get tested early and often by Washington and the Terrapins' offense. Overall, there just isn't a great feeling about this game if we're being honest.
