After rolling to wins over VMI and Old Dominion at home, the Virginia Tech football team hits the road for the first time on Saturday night under James Franklin. Virginia Tech will visit Maryland for their lone non-conference game on the road this season at 7:30 p.m.
It will be an early-season showdown of two 2-0 teams after the Terrapins opened the season with wins over Hampton and UConn. Head coach Mike Locksley is coaching for his job with Maryland, and he will have his team ready to go. The Hokies better be ready for an early onslaught. That might be even more obvious after Virginia Tech defensive back Jaquez White gave Maryland and quarterback Malik Washington some bulletin board material.
Speaking with the media on Monday, White was asked about Washington, a sophomore who picked Maryland over Virginia Tech during his recruitment in high school, and he dropped some bulletin board material for the Terrapins' signal caller.
“He's a pretty good quarterback,'' White said. "He has a decent arm. I don't really think he's that accurate, but I mean, he's pretty good. He's not a runner. He’s looking to throw the ball every time.“
Ouch. Against UConn, Washington was 34-for-41 through the air for 347 yards and two touchdowns, while completing 18 straight passes at one point. You can bet that Washington will be throwing the ball a lot against Virginia Tech and might even target White a couple of times.
Luke Reynolds and Mylachi Williams earn ACC honors
After a 44-21 drubbing of Old Dominion, two Virginia Tech players earned ACC Player of the Week Honors, one on offense and another on defense. Monday, the conference announced its Players of the Week, which were the top performances from all the games over the weekend.

Tight end Luke Reynolds had eight catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns against the Monarchs. In the first two games combined, the Penn State transfer has 13 catches, 158 yards, and three touchdowns. He is a player on offense at a position that the Hokies haven't used much, so a lot of balls should be thrown to him each week.
On the defensive side of the ball, defensive lineman Mylachi Williams had four tackles, 3.5 for a loss, and two sacks, while forcing a pair of ODU fumbles. Another Penn State transfer, Williams is a key part of a defensive line that can be a deep area if they can stay healthy.
