Back in the spring, it was announced that the Virginia Tech baseball team was going to take part in the AmegyBack College Baseball Series at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, in late February. It will be the third of three straight college baseball weekend series in the stadium.
The field joining the Hokies is a difficult one. Tennessee, Texas A&M, Arizona State, UCLA, and Mississippi State. If anything, Virginia Tech is going to look to pick multiple opportunities early in the season to build an NCAA Tournament résumé. On Wednesday, the matchups were announced.
Virginia Tech baseball to face a trio of SEC teams in late February in Texas
It's tough to begin the college baseball season in mid-February, and John Szefc will take his club down to Texas to play three big-time SEC programs. The Hokies will open with Texas A&M on Feb. 27 at 8 p.m., then will play Mississippi State on Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. They will close out the weekend against the 2024 National Champion, Tennessee, at 11:30 a.m. on March 1. Texas A&M and Tennessee met in the final series in Omaha.

As always, Virginia Tech's roster went through some changes following the 2025 season, but it did get some key retention. You get the feeling that this is a big season coming up for Szefc, who also made some coaching changes, and a berth in the NCAA Tournament is the goal.
For the second straight year, the Hokies started out the season well and looked like they were heading for an NCAA Tournament berth, then things went south very fast in mid-April, and another collapse happened. This upcoming season, however, gives them a golden opportunity to pick up some early-season wins that would open some eyes come late May with the tournament committee. All three teams Tech is facing are always tough in the ultra-competitive SEC.
