For the second straight season, the Virginia Tech baseball team is quickly fading from being a potential NCAA Tournament team. Like last season, the Hokies had a strong first half of the season, looking like one of the top 64 programs in the country, but a brutal last six weeks have Virginia Tech playing for their tournament lives this weekend at home against Virginia before the ACC Tournament next week.
There are going to be some big subtractions from the 2025 club when the 2026 season rolls around, from graduating seniors to potential portal losses, which is becoming big in all college sports. However, when looking ahead to the 2026 season, Virginia Tech's schedule is going to be a lot tougher in the first month of the season, which includes a trip to the Lone Star State to take part in an early-season tournament.
Virginia Tech baseball to take part in 2026 Amegy Bank Baseball Series
Over the last couple of season, Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, the home of MLBs Texas Rangers, has hosted an early-season tournament, the Amegy Bank Baseball Series, with Power Four teams and next February, the Hokies will be part of the field for three days of college baseball that should help Virginia Tech when it comes to their RPI next May and a potential NCAA Tournament berth.
Joining John Szefc's team in Arlington from Feb. 27-March 1, which is the third weekend of the season, is Arizona State, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Texas A&M , and UCLA. Those are some very good programs, including Tennessee which won the College World Series last June. Matchups for the tournament will be announced at a later date.
If Szefc wanted to give his team an early-season test, he accomplished that by getting into this tournament. This is a good early-season test for the Hokies a couple of weeks before ACC play would begin.
