Last year, the Virginia Tech baseball team looked like an NCAA Tournament team for most of the season. Then came the collapse. After being what looked like a lock for the NCAA Tournament field, the Hokies stumbled and stumbled down the stretch, and instead of playing themselves into the tournament, they played themselves out.

Fast forward one year later and it feels like we are heading down that same path again with John Szefc’s team. After sending a strong statement in the middle of their ACC schedule with series wins of Louisville, sweeping Wake Forest on the road, and then taking a series at Notre Dame. Then the 2024 Hokies have emerged.

Virginia Tech baseball heading down troubling road late in 2025

After losing two out of three games this weekend at Duke, it’s the third straight ACC series loss for the Hokies after getting swept by Florida State and losing two out of three at home to North Carolina. Things are not going to get easier with two ACC series left, at Pittsburgh this upcoming weekend and at home against Virginia later next month before the ACC Tournament, which has a new single-elimination format this season.

Several factors are working into the Hokies' late-season slide, again, and it has become a common theme: pitching that isn’t getting the job done. Offensively, for the most part, they are doing enough to win series, but their pitching continues to let them down. Brent Renfrow has been a reliable Friday night starter, but the rest of the weekend has become a toss-up up At this point in the season, just winning series should be good enough. They have dropped three in a row and now sit 11-13 in conference play.

Most NCAA Tournament projections have had the Hokies in the field, but another weekend loss at Pitt this weekend, and things could change quickly. Let’s not overlook a huge non-conference game with Liberty on Tuesday night that could help their case for a postseason berth later next month. They quickly need to turn things around, or they could be looking at another late-season collapse narrative.
