We are into the month of May and the transfer portal additions have been coming for Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry this cycle. He has added some depth on both sides of the ball, but truth be told, there is one area of need that the Hokies have that needs to be addressed this spring.

Last season at this time, Virginia Tech added UCLA transfer Collin Schlee out of the portal. What an addition he was. Starting quarterback Kyron Drones went down with an injury in the second half of the season, forcing Schlee and Pop Watson to come on in relief for four of the final five games. Schlee was injured against Duke in the next-to-last game of the season, forcing Watson to play against Virginia and split time with Schlee in the Duke's Mayo Bowl against Minnesota.

Virginia Tech needs to add a transfer QB this portal cycle

The news in the spring for Drones and Watson was not good. In early April, Pry announced that Drones was going to miss the final week of practices and the Spring Game and undergo a procedure, but he should be ready for fall camp. On the day of the Spring Game, Watson did not play with a tissue issue.

If there is one thing to take away from the last two years, it's that both Drones and Watson need an experienced backup with their injury history and style of play. They are both players who like to run the ball, and their bodies take a pounding over time.

Redshirt freshman Davi Belfort hit the portal a couple of weeks ago and returned to his home state to attend Central Florida. True freshman signal callers A.J. Brand and Kelden Ryan are the other two QBs on the roster, and adding someone from the portal with experience is vital this cycle for Virginia Tech.
