After their first bye of the 2025 season, the Virginia Tech football team will return to the field on Friday night when California comes across the country to play the Hokies in the first ACC matchup between the two schools.

Virginia Tech comes into the game 2-5 in a season that feels like they will be playing out the string after it started with three straight losses to South Carolina, Vanderbilt, and Old Dominion, which got Brent Pry fired. Since then, Philip Montgomery has been named interim coach, and some players have entered the Transfer Portal. To add insult to injury, the Hokies have dealt with a slew of injuries as well.

California is having a surprising year under Justin Wilcox, who entered the season with some pressure on him. Unlike Pry, Wilcox was able to get his team off to a good start, and they are 5-2 after a 21-18 win over North Carolina last Friday night. They are one win away from becoming bowl-eligible.

Virginia Tech vs. California: Prediction

If there is some good news for Virginia Tech, it was the release of the first availability report on Wednesday night. Some of the Hokies' key offensive players, running back Terion Stewart, and wide receiver Cameron Seldon, were listed as probable. If they can play and contribute, then that would be big for quarterback Kyron Drones and Montgomery.

On the flip side, the Hokies' defense is going to have its hands full with Cal freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who has been impressive in his first seven games. He has thrown for 1,696 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He completed 21 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown against UNC.

Prediction: California 34, Virginia Tech 24
