After playing seven games in the first seven weeks, Virginia Tech had its first bye of the 2025 season this past weekend. With the injuries they are dealing with and players in the Transfer Portal after former head coach Brent Pry was fired, the break couldn't have come at a better time.

They get back to work this week, and it's a short one for interim head coach Philip Montgomery and his team. They will host California on Friday night at Lane Stadium. The Golden Bears are having a good season and are coming off a three-point win at home over Bill Belichick and North Carolina last Friday night.

This is the second cross-country flight the Golden Bears have had this year, as they traveled to Boston College last month and came away with a victory. You would think the Hokies would have an advantage being off while Cal was playing last weekend and then traveling cross-country. Nothing, however, is a given in 2025 with this Virginia Tech team.

Virginia Tech has dropped two straight games after losing at home to Wake Forest and at Georgia Tech after beating North Carolina State in their conference opener last month.
