It’s hard to believe, but the final weekend of the ACC baseball regular season is here. For Virginia Tech, things again are looking bleak in terms of making the NCAA Tournament and hosting Virginia this weekend, it feels like John Szefc’s team needs to come up with a sweep of the Cavaliers to get back into the postseason conversation.
Virginia comes into the three-game set, which begins on Thursday night and continues Friday and Saturday, with the ACC Tournament scheduled to begin next week. Once again, Brent Renfrow will get the ball to begin the series, trying to get his team off on the right foot.
Virginia Tech baseball faces a pivotal series against Virginia
This is a series with two teams going in opposite directions. While Virginia Tech is struggling and going in the wrong direction, Virginia is on an upward trend after a sweep of Miami last weekend in Charlottesville. In fact, nearly off of the baseball bracketology has the Cavaliers in the 64-team field while the Hokies are either part of the next four out or not even mentioned. Two teams that are going in opposite directions.
This is the second straight year where Virginia Tech looked like they were going to make the NCAA Tournament, but have faltered big time down the stretch. After series wins over Louisville, Notre Dame, and a sweep of Wake Forest on the road, the Hokies have dropped their ACC series, including being swept by Pittsburgh two weekends ago.
Again, this feels like a must-sweep for the Hokies in terms of getting on the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble, if that’s even possible at this point. It’s going to be difficult against a rival who is playing their best baseball of the season and would love nothing more than to come in and add more misery to Tech’s season in Blacksburg.
