This is a big first full week of April for the Hokies baseball team.

Last season, after hitting the midway point of the ACC schedule, the Virginia Tech baseball team hit some major roadblocks and stumbled down the stretch. Once seemed like an NCAA Tournament team, the Hokies played their way out of the 64-team field when all was said and done.

After taking two out of three games at Notre Dame over the weekend, Virginia Tech has won three straight series over two ranked teams at the time, Louisville and Wake Forest, before rallying to win the final two games against the Irish after dropping the opener on Friday. Those results moved them into the Top 25 of D1Baseball, which ranked them No. 25 this week.

At 9-6 in the conference, things are setting up for John Szefc’s team to build an impressive resume. That begins this week at home.

Virginia Tech faces a huge portion of the schedule as ACC play hits the back nine

After winning two out of three in South Bend, Virginia Tech returns home this week to host 20th-ranked Troy in a non-conference mid-week game, then welcomes in Florida State over the weekend for a giant three-game series. You could call it a statement series.

FSU will be coming sour after losing two out of three at home this past weekend for Wake Forest and being run-ruled in the final two games after being walked off in the opener. Szefc also put a target on his team's back this weekend with a quote two weeks ago after winning Game 1 in Winston-Salem on March 28.

“Our guys are good. [Wake Forest] has good players, I think we have better players,'' Szefc said. "After last week, I keep saying it. I know a lot of people don’t believe it because we don’t have Florida State written across our chest.”

I don’t think there wasn’t any intent behind that comment as Szefc was basically talking about a lack of respect his team has been getting. One way to get that respect is to go out and win the series against the Seminoles. The certainly can do that and it all starts with Brent Renfrow on Friday night.
