Last weekend was a big step in the right direction for the Virginia Tech baseball team when they took two out of three games at home against 16th-ranked Louisville. This weekend, the Hokies were looking to continue the step in the right direction in ACC play, but the task is tough at 16th-ranked Wake Forest.
The Demon Deacons are one of the best teams in the country inside their own ballpark which makes the assignment that much tougher. Friday night, the Hokies started the series off with a 13-2 win in eight innings after plating nine first inning runs. Saturday afternoon in Game 2, the Hokies jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two and a half innings and held off a Wake Forest rally to secure the series with a three-run win.

The Hokies offense picked up where they left off on Friday with three runs in the first inning, two in the second on a two-run Ben Watson home run, and three more in the third. Wake Forest plated six in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 8-6. It would have been easy to think, "Oh no, here we go again'' with Virginia Tech's pitching, but that wasn't the case.
Garrett Michel delivered a key hit in the game with a two-run home run of his own in the sixth to extend the lead to 11-7. The Demon Deacons cut the deficit to 11-8 in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Sam Tackett robbed Wake Forest of a second home run in the frame with an incredible catch to lead off the inning.

Virginia Tech improved to 19-8 overall and 6-5 in the ACC and given how things started, this is an impressive feat. They are suddenly one-game behind Wake Forest in conference play and can leap them in the standings with a win in Game 3 on Sunday night in the series final.
