Coming off a disappointing 2024 season, the Virginia Tech football team is looking at a huge 2025 season. Nobody might be facing a bigger season than Brent Pry. If things don’t go well, he could be looking at his final season in Blacksburg. Let’s hope he’s able to do that.
Last month, the ACC officially released all the schedules for the 2025 season, including Virginia Tech’s. Once again, the Hokies will play all four of their non-conference games before beginning ACC play. It’s a difficult slate, to say the least, compared to this past season for the Hokies with a roster that is not as talented. Maybe that’s a good thing? Lower expectations could yield different results. It’s never too early to look ahead and let’s take a look at the 2026 opponents for Virginia Tech on the football field.
Virginia Tech 2026 football opponents
This will be another season with Virginia Tech playing all four of their non-conference games in the first month, with three of the games being at Lane Stadium and one true road game at Big Ten foe.

- Sept. 12: vs. Old Dominion
- Sept. 19: at Maryland
- Sept. 26: vs. James Madison

Some interesting takeaways from this set of known opponents. It needs to be said again, Virginia Tech needs to find a way out of the contract with Old Dominion. It can hurt them much more than help them. Maryland, away, is going to be a big game in terms of recruiting and bragging rights.
As far as the ACC slate goes, Virginia and Miami have been the common opponents on a year-to-year basis under the new scheduling format with the additions of Stanford, California, and SMU. This upcoming season, Cal is coming to Blacksburg in October and the Hokies are making the return trip in 2026. For other games of note, the road slate isn’t easy with trips to Clemson and BC along with Miami on tap.
I know, we need to get through the 2025 campaign, but it is never too early to look ahead at some of the opponents on the future schedules.
