After a disappointing 2024 season, the 2025 campaign is certainly a big one for head coach Brent Pry and his future at the helm of the Virginia Tech program. If he is going to take some heat off of himself, he’s going to have to do it with a new roster and a lot of guys stepping into key roles.
On top of that, the schedule is brutal for Virginia Tech next fall with a pair of SEC opponents to open the season, followed by a more difficult conference schedule compared to last season. It’s never too early to look ahead to next season and now that the schedule is official, here is a guess at predicting the Hokies’ 2025 record.
Week 1: vs. South Carolina
The Hokies get a very difficult season-opener in Atlanta on Sunday of Labor Day Weekend. Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks have the feel that Virginia Tech had at this time last season and are led by quarterback LaNorris Sellers. Despite being a neutral site game, this is a very difficult season opener.
Prediction: South Carolina wins, 41-16
Virginia Tech Record: 0-1
Week 2: vs. Vanderbilt
The 2024 season was supposed to be the next step under Pry in just his third year in Blacksburg. A season-opener at Vanderbilt was supposed to set the tone for the season. It did but for all the wrong reasons. Behind QB Diego Pavia, the Commodores won in overtime after tying the game late. It was the loss that hurt, but it was the way it happened with Vandy looking like the better team from start to finish. With Pavia back in 2025, it’s hard to envision a different result, even at Lane Stadium. This has all the makings of a one-score loss.
Prediction: Vanderbilt wins, 27-20
Virginia Tech Record: 0-2
Week 3: vs. Old Dominion
Virginia Tech needs to try and find a way out of this series. Just too many bad things could happen. In the last two years, the Hokies have wins over the Monarchs, but they have been far from impressive. They should pick up another one, this time at home.
Prediction: Virginia Tech wins, 31-17
Virginia Tech Record: 1-2
Week 4: vs. Wofford
There is no other way to put it, this has to be a win if the Hokies are going to become bowl-eligible. It’s the final non-conference game before the difficult eight-game conference schedule begins a week later.
Prediction: Virginia Tech wins, 34-16
Virginia Tech Record: 2-2
Week 5: at North Carolina State
An ACC opener in Raleigh is not going to be easy against a team coming off a disappointing 2024 season. It will be the fourth conference game for the Wolfpack who play Virginia, Wake Forest and Duke in the first four weeks.
Prediction: NC State win, 27-23
Virginia Tech Record: 2-3 (0-1 ACC)
Week 6: vs. Wake Forest
The home ACC opener is against a Demon Deacons team going through a transition after Washington State coach Jake Dickert replaced Dave Clawson. Wake will be better under Dickert but it may take some time and the Hokies are hoping it does.
Prediction: Virginia Tech wins, 26-20
Virginia Tech Record: 3-3 (1-1 ACC)
Week 7: at Georgia Tech
Call me crazy, but do you think the Yellow Jackets will be fired up for the Hokies on this weekend? I think so. Last season, Virginia Tech beat Georgia Tech, 21-6, at Lane Stadium, and they did so by beating their second and third quarterbacks. Head coach Brent Key returns QB Haynes King, and putting up points will not be an issue for them this season. The question will be, can the Hokies hang and put up points themselves? Last year, maybe, but this upcoming season, it’s hard to see it happening.
Prediction: Georgia Tech wins, 38-21
Virginia Tech Record: 3-4 (1-2 ACC)
Week 9: vs. California
After a much-deserved first bye week, the Hokies will play their annual weeknight game at home, but the question is, which night, Thursday or Friday? That will be determined over time, but the Golden Bears will make their first trip to Blacksburg and they will be looking to take the next step after bowl-eligible first season in the conference. This will be one of the more interesting home games as this game will be in late October and it could be a crispy night for the visitors.
Prediction: Virginia Tech wins, 27-21
Virginia Tech Record: 4-4 (2-2 ACC)
Week 10: vs. Louisville
One big takeaway from the November schedule is that the Hokies have a brutal final four games. It begins with the Cardinals at home and they will be one of a handful of teams that wil be capable of making a run to the Championship Game. This is a game that Virginia Tech will have to steal in the month if they are going to become bowl-eligible.
Prediction: Virginia Tech wins, 24-20
Virginia Tech Record: 5-4 (3-2 ACC)
Week 12: at Florida State
One year after being left out od the final four-team College Football Playoff, the Seminoles responded with a dreadful 2-10 season and some major changes. One of those changes was at quarterback with Boston College transfer Thomas Castellanos joining them. The Hokies have had a lot of success against Castellanos in the last two seasons. It feels like it might be different when he’s wearing an FSU uniform.
Prediction: Florida State wins, 28-17
Virginia Tech Record: 5-5 (3-3 ACC)
Week 13: vs. Miami
Virginia Tech’s final home game of the season is the Hurricanes and QB Carson Beck, a Georgia transfer. By now, you know what happened last September in South Florida when the Hokies had a touchdown overturned by video replay on the game’s final play. It’s a loss that will be talked about for a long time in Blacksburg. Mario Cristobal is loading up for another run and hoping to get over the top and into the ACC Championship Game next December.
Prediction: Miami wins, 31-23
Virginia Tech Record: 5-6 (3-4 ACC)
Week 14: at Virginia
So, here are again. You know that this game will come down to Virginia Tech being 5-6 and needing to win Thanksgiving Weekend in Charlottesville to become bowl-eligible, right? Of course, it will. This year’s team, however, is going to be a lot different looking. Health will be a big part of how this game plays out and it just feels like Virginia finally picking up a win in the series is coming at some point. Until it happens, we’ll go with the Hokies.
Prediction: Virginia Tech wins, 27-23
Virginia Tech Record: 6-6 (4-4 ACC)
That record sure does look familiar, doesn’t it? This is going to be an unpredictable season, but a big one for Pry in terms of his future as head coach. This season could go anywhere from 4-8, 5-7, 6-6, or 7-5. Anything is possible, but it feels like playing past Thanksgiving Weekend is a must for Pry.
