Two Truths & a Lie After Virginia Tech Football's Rout of Boston College
By Scott Roche
Coming off their bye week, the Virginia Tech football team started as close to perfect as they could on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Tyler Bowen called a great half with his team scoring on four of their five drives and the defense forcing turnovers that led to points. Then things changed in the third quarter before order was restored in the fourth.
The end result was a 42-21 win over Boston College to get the Hokies’ to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in the ACC. As we look ahead to Georgia Tech next weekend, here are two truths and a lie after Virginia Tech’s fourth win of the series against the Eagles on Thursday night all-time.
Truth: Kyron Drones still makes head-scratching mistakes
For as good as Kyron Drones is, there are still times when he makes you scratch your head and “What are you doing?” The moment came in the third quarter with the Hokies leading 28-7. After allowing BC’s first touchdown, the Baylor transfer came out and set the Eagles up deep in Tech territory with a head-scratching interception.
Drones was flushed out of the pocket and being chased toward the Boston College sideline and instead of throwing the ball away (maybe he was and didn’t do a very good job of it) he lofted a pass down the sideline into the arms of a BC defensive back. It led to more momentum to shift in the quarter and made things just too interesting.
Truth: Virginia Tech needs to make things interesting
Speaking of making things interesting, do the Hokies always have to make fans sweat everything out this year? After a dominating first half where other than a Drones fumble in the second quarter, both sides of the ball were nearly flawless. The third quarter happened with a 28-point lead.
A long touchdown drive by BC followed a Drones pick and Bhayshul Tuten fumble and before you knew it, it was a one-score game going into the fourth. Jaden Keller made the defensive play of the game on fourth-and-1 at midfield with a huge tackle that forced a turnover on downs. Three plays later, the offense found the end zone and restored the two-score lead. Disaster avoided.
Lie: Virginia Tech will struggle with Boston College’s defense
OK, I’ll admit, I’m guilty of thinking that the Hokies would have a difficult time not only running the ball against the Eagles but also scoring touchdowns on the ground. BC entered the game allowing only two rushing touchdowns and all Virginia Tech did was double that number and then some with five. Tuten rushed for a single-game school record 266 yards. Didn't see that coming. Glad I was wrong about that one.
