The Virginia Tech football team opens the 2025 season against two tough SEC teams, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Yes, you read the right, Vanderbilt is considered a tough game with quarterback Diego Pavia, who ran roughshod on the Hokies last season in Nashville.

Virginia Tech gets its first four games as non-conference games again this season and will host Old Dominion and Wofford after hosting the Commodores in Week 2. After that, the Hokies will begin an eight-game ACC slate to close out the season, and they are going to be facing signal callers who are, well, slightly overrated. With that said, here are three quarterbacks who are getting a little too much hype going into 2025.

1. Carson Beck, Miami

After Cam Ward played his one season in South Florida after coming over from Washington State, he was the first overall pick of the Tennessee Titans in the NFL Draft back in April in Green Bay, and the keys have been turned over to Georgia transfer Carson Beck, who was injured at the end of the season.

Beck and Georgia fell well short of expectations last season, and he gets another shot with the Hurricanes, a program that has fallen short of expectations under Mario Cristobal during his tenure at Miami. He is projected to make in the range of $6 million this season for the Hurricanes, and a late November trip to Blacksburg should be very, very interesting.

2. Thomas Castellanos, Florida State

After a disaster of a 2024 season in Tallahassee, the Seminoles are turning to Boston College transfer Thomas Castellanos to turn their fortunes around after DJ Uiagalelei's rough one season at FSU. Now they bring in Castellanos, who had a rough ending with the Eagles and head coach Bill O'Brien last year, but he struggled at times in Chestnut Hill.

Virginia Tech dominated him the last two seasons in a pair of blowouts, but who knows, maybe things will be different with a "better team'' around him at Florida State. He certainly is feeling his oats earlier this summer with some trash talk of Alabama, the Seminoles' Week 1 opponent. If things don't get off to a good start, then who knows what the Hokies will be facing on the road in November.

3. Chandler Morris, Virginia

Believe it or not, but this will be Year 6 of college football for Virginia transfer quarterback Chandler Morris. He comes to Charlottesville from North Texas. Last year for the Mean Green, he threw for over 3,7000 yards and 31 touchdowns along with 12 interceptions.

He played one year at Oklahoma, where he saw very limited action, then three years at TCU, where he was sacked 17 times, threw five picks in 2023, and threw over 2,000 yards in those three seasons. His play against Power 4 teams is nothing to write home about, and Tony Elliott is putting a lot of faith in him in what is considered a make-or-break season for the Cavaliers' head coach. We'll see how this ends up working out, but Morris needs to prove he's capable of having success against Power 4 schools.
