The last two seasons, there have been few players or teams that Virginia Tech football has had more success against than Boston College and quarterback Thomas Castellanos. In two games, the Hokies have hung 90 points combined on the Eagles and made life miserable for BC's former signal caller.
Late last season, things fell apart between Castellanos and Eagles coach Bill O'Brien, which ultimately led to him leaving the team before the end of the season and entering the transfer portal. He has found a new home in the ACC for the 2025 season after committing to Florida State and Mike Norvell. Speaking with Pete Nakos of On3 Sports, he didn't hold back discussing this time at the heights, mainly last season.
"Bill O’Brien and I butted heads early in the season,'' said Castellanos. "I got banged up a few games. We had a meeting, and it kind of blew up in my face. I did so much for that program, and I just wasn’t repaid the right way."
Well then. Let's remember that Castellanos was inherited by O'Brien and was recruited by former BC coach Jeff Hafley, who bolted Chestnut Hill in February 2024 to become the Green Bay Packers' defensive coordinator. Castellanos didn't stop there.
"I'm not just playing for Florida State,'' he said. "I'm playing for coaches who are fathers and who have homes and families here. I'm trying to save jobs and win."
It didn't stop there either as he fired warning shots at Alabama, FSU's Week 1 opponent this season.
"They don't have Nick Saban to save them,'' Castellanos said. "I just don't see them stopping me."
Virginia Tech is one school that has "stopped him"
When the dust settles on the opening weekend, Castellanos may very well be right about the Crimson Tide trying to stop him, but those are certainly some comments from Norvell's new QB. However, there is one school that he has not had success with since being in the ACC, and that's Virginia Tech.
In 2023, the Hokies went on the road and held Castellanos to 10-of-20 passing for 110 yards, two huge interceptions, and a touchdown in a 48-22 win, Tech's first road win of the season. Then last October, the Eagles traveled to Lane Stadium and Castellanos went 17-of-26 for 205 yards, two touchdowns, and was sacked four times in a 42-21 loss.
Castellanos certainly is talking a big game going into the 2025 season, but having more four and five-star recruits around him might be what he needs to have a bounce-back season. The Hokies travel to Tallahassee in November, and this might be the year that Castellanos finally gets the best of Brent Pry and Virginia Tech, but for someone who struggled at times at Boston College, he certainly has a lot to say going into a new season at a new school.
