The college football transfer portal never rests. Thursday, it was announced that Georgia quarterback Carson Beck was bypassing the NFL Draft for another year in college. He reportedly had a “Do not contact” tag in the portal which meant he already knew where he was going.
On Friday, he committed to Miami and will try to follow in the shoes of Cam Ward with the Hurricanes and try to get them over the hump in the ACC and into the 12-team College Football Playoff. He was 24-3 with the Bulldogs under coach Kirby Smart and he heads to South Florida to play for Mario Cristobal.
This is not great news for Virginia Tech and Brent Pry. Under the new ACC scheduling format, Virginia Tech and Miami will play each season. This season’s game was in Miami and by now, everyone knows how it ended with a Kyron Drones Hail Mary pass being hauled in for a touchdown only to have replay overturn the call on the field without any indisputable evidence. That loss summed up the Hokies season that saw them finish 6-6 and needing to beat Virginia Thanksgiving Weekend to become bowl-eligible.
As for Miami and 2025, Beck is going to be coming off a UCL injury and surgery. He is expected to miss spring practices but be ready for camp over the summer. Beck is likely picking up a very nice lucrative deal with the Hurricanes and he will visit Blacksburg next season, with the date to be released later.
Virginia Tech’s defense is undergoing a major overhaul between players using up all of their eligibility and the transfer portal, which will make not only this game but the entire season interesting. As far as Virginia Tech goes, they will not only welcome Beck to Lane Stadium in the fall but also Vanderbilt and QB Diego Pavia in Week 2 on Sept. 6.
