Virginia Tech football coach Bret Pry is a defensive guy from his days most recently as the coordinator at Penn State for James Franklin before being named head coach of the Hokies. Over the last 12 days, he has lost a ton of talent in his secondary between the NFL Draft and transfer portal.

With a number of needs for a roster that will look different in 2025 than it did in 2024, the third-year Virginia Tech coach and his staff are making the secondary a priority in this transfer portal cycle. Late Saturday night and a few hours after picking up a second commitment on the backend in three days, Tech got a commitment from Rice safety Tyson Flowers who has two years of eligibility remaining.

East Carolina transfer Isaiah Brown-Murray committed to Virginia Tech earlier Saturday night before Flowers, who was a big piece of the Owls this season, committed on his X account. The 5-foot-11, 211-pound Forth Worth, Texas native recorded 38 tackles this season and 26 of them were solo. He had one forced fumble and two interceptions, including a 34-yard pick-6 against Texas Southern in September.

The rebuild of the Virginia Tech secondary is coming together over the last three days with Clemson safety Sherrod Covil, Jr. committing on Wednesday night and Brown-Murray and Flowers on Saturday night. The losses this season are going to be impactful, but with some promising young players and adding three players to date through the portal, Pry continues to add depth. Again, the results are what they are for Pry in games, but you can't deny the work that he does with the transfer portal and the depth he builds for his roster.
