One of the more interesting college football recruitments is about to come close to ending on Thursday. That is when Class of 2027 quarterback Peter Bourque is scheduled to make his commitment for a second time.
The first time, he committed to the University of Michigan and former coach Sherrone Moore. However, when the school parted ways with him shortly after the regular season ended in early December, Bourque de-committed from the Wolverines to reopen his recruiting.
When he did, several schools got back into the mix for the four-star Massachusetts signal caller. One of those teams was Virginia Tech, with new coach James Franklin and quarterbacks coach Danny O'Brien. It wasn't surprising that the Hokies got into the mix.
Now, the real question is who is actually in the mix. There were reports that it was Georgia, Penn State, and Virginia Tech. Then Penn State appeared to be out and focusing on Will Wood, another Massachusetts Class of 2027 quarterback. However, one Penn State insider threw gas on the Bourque recruitment, and it may have been premature. We think.
Penn State insider circles back on Peter Bourque prediction
Penn State insider, Adam Gorney of Rivals, logged a prediction for Bourque to commit to Penn State. That sent Nittany Lions fans into a tizzy. It confused them. He backtracked on that decision on X when asked about it.
"Yeah that was a dumb move. I was on a radio show and throwing in some picks and remembered what a source told me a few weeks ago which doesn’t seem to be the case any longer,'' Gorney wrote.
"Just get to know Will Wood and PSU should be good."
However, expect the unexpected before Bourque. Anything is possible. Right now, it appears to be down Kirby Smart and Georgia, and James Franklin and Virginia Tech. All three teams reportedly were in Marion, Mass., on Tuesday to watch him throw and work out. Penn State also reportedly was in Westwood, Mass., as well as checking in on Wood.
Virginia Tech and Georgia remain the two likeliest landing spots for Bourque, but never count a last-second move from Campbell and Penn State. Franklin, O'Brien, and the Hokies will be in on other signal callers in the Class of 2027, but they have made Bourque a priority. Was Penn State jumping back in with Franklin and Smart to turn the heat up? Does Penn State really want Bourque and Wood? It's unlikely that both would commit to the Nittany Lions, but again, anything is possible.
Bourque's decision will come on Thursday, at least we think, and this will likely be over. Virginia Tech insiders have been rather quiet when it comes to Bourque, and maybe there's nothing to it, or maybe there is. We'll find out soon enough, but this recruitment has had several ups and downs with a final answer right around the corner. This would be a huge addition for Virginia Tech and one that could pay off down the line for the Hokies.
