Where does Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry rank among power conference head coaches?
By Scott Roche
When Brent Pry took over Justin Fuente, he was left with picking up the pieces the former Virginia Tech coach had left. In his first season, he went 3-8 and things did not start well last season with the Hokies starting 1-3 through their four non-conference games. Then things changed.
When ACC play began, Virginia Tech won five out of their eight conference games and capped off the regular season with a 55-17 rout of Virginia Thanksgiving Weekend on the road to become bowl-eligible. The Hokies finished the season with a 41-20 Military Bowl win over Tulane to finish 7-6. After that strong finish to the season, where does Pry rank among power conference coaches post-spring?
Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry ranks 50th among power conference coaches
Pry checked in at No. 50 among power conference coaches going into the 2024 season according to CBS Sports.
"Brent Pry: One of this season's biggest climbers, and it's easy to see why. After a sluggish start in Blacksburg, the Hokies finished the 2023 season strong and are viewed by some as a dark horse in the ACC this season. I don't know how much of an improvement we'll realistically see on last year's 7-6 mark, but Pry already feels like a good fit at Tech. 2023 rank: 67 (+17)"
If there is one big takeaway from what has happened since the Hokies rolled over the Cavaliers in late November, Pry has had a ton of retainment for the 2024 season from some key players while getting some major additions from the transfer portal. If there is one thing that has been evident over the last five months it's that Pry and his staff are building a strong culture in Blacksburg and that has been the message from both the players returning and the transfers.
Expactitions are very high for the Hokies going into 2024 and if they have the type of season they are capable, then Pry should rise rather quickly up the rankings sooner rather than later.
