Virginia Tech women's basketball gets a commitment from highly-ranked point guard
By Scott Roche
Shortly after being hired to replace Kenny Brooks as women's basketball coach at Virginia Tech, Megan Duffy didn't waste time to begin recruiting. One of her recruits to visit was a talented point guard from North Carolina, Katie Sears, who had many Division 1 offers.
Monday night, Sears announced her commitment on X and she committed to Duffy and the Hokies.
Katie Sears commits to Virginia Tech and Megan Duffy
Sears, who is from Boone, N.C., and plays at Watauga High School, picked Virginia Tech over Boston College, Wake Forest, Purdue, Clemson, Marquette, Michigan, James Madison, Kansas, and other schools.
According to Prep Girls Hoop, Sears is the No. 2 player in the Class of 2025 in North Carolina and the 5-foot-9 junior averaged 30 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists a game while collecting her third conference Player of the Year award.
Sears, who played for Team Curry in AAU, is the first commit that Duffy has got in the Class of 2025 as she is beginning to make her mark on the program. On the announcement that Sears posted on X, she ended it by walking into Duffy's office and giving her the good news first-hand.
As it currently stands, and as we know, things change by the minute with the transfer portal, but the 2025-26 Virginia Tech roster includes Sears, Carleigh Wenzel (junior), Samyha Suffren (junior), Mackenzie Nelson (sophomore), Lelia Wells (sophomore), Lani White (senior), Carys Baker (junior), Kayl Petersen (sophomore), Myah Hazelton (sophomore) and Ramiya White (sophomore). Again, a lot can change with the transfer portal before the 2025-26 season starts, but Duffy is off to a good start building her future roster in Blacksburg. Who can watch some of her highlights here.
