Following the news of coach Kenny Brooks and players Georgia Amoore and Clara Strack heading to Kentucky, fans are weary of how the upcoming season will play out for the Hokies. With the announcement of Megan Duffy as the new women's coach, feelings are more optimistic. Since arriving in Blacksburg, Duffy has retained key players, including Carleigh Wenzel, Matilda Ekh, and Carys Baker. With some players hesitant to return, Duffy has made a statement by securing a solid 2024-25 roster.

Why the retainment is huge for Virginia Tech's 2024-25 season

This retainment should excite fans and bring renewed faith in Duffy to keep the program's momentum going. Wenzel, Ekh, and Baker provide a sound core for Duffy to build around going into the 2024-25 season. Carleigh Wenzel finished the past season strong with her highest-scoring game in the NCAA Tournament vs. Marshall, where she also recorded six rebounds, seven assists, and two blocks. She will be a good leader for Duffy's new team.

With Wenzel at guard, Matilda Ekh and Carys Baker give her good shooters to spread the floor with. Baker was a strong Freshman off the bench, shooting 38% from beyond the arc. As she steps into a veteran role in her sophomore season, she will be one to watch for the Hokies. Ekh ended last season scoring in double-digits 21 times and shooting 40% from the 3-point line. She is another key player returning for her senior season. Baker and Ekh will be good 3-point weapons on the floor, with Wenzel helping to move the ball.

Samyha Suffren has also withdrawn her name from the transfer portal. This should give fans hope for continued success in the Virginia Tech women's basketball program. Retaining players and remaining confident in the program after a disappointing end to this past season has been necessary, and Megan Duffy has done just that.
