It’s been almost two months since Megan Duffy took over the Virginia Tech women’s basketball program after Kenny Brook left for Kentucky two days after Baylor eliminated the Hokies from the 2024 NCAA Tournament in the second round.

Since arriving in Blacksburg, Duffy has received some retainment from some players who decided to remain following Brooks's leaving, but Monday night, she put her first mark on the program since being hired.

Katie Sears' commitment is the first huge win for Megan Duffy at Virginia Tech

Duffy got her first commitment in the Class of 2025 when Sears committed to the Hokies. For the last three years Sears’ has been the conference Player of the Year at Watauga High School, where she averaged 30 points, 11 rebounds and six assists a game. She also had 38 points in a state semifinal round game.

Sears, the No. 2 player in the state of North Carolina according to Prep Girls Basketball,  visited Virginia Tech at the end of April and passed on several other offers from Division 1 schools to play for Duffy.

This is the first big step for Duffy in putting her mark on the Virginia Tech program. She had a very successful recruiting career at Marquette and she is off to a good start at Virginia Tech. Landing Sears is big as she keeps her away from all three in-state schools, North Carolina, Duke, and North Carolina State, as well as Clemson, where she also had an offer from.

Recruiting is going to pick up over the summer for the Class of 2025 and Duffy is building a roster for the year after next and her first big commitment is Sears and there is likely more on the way.
