Virginia Tech Women's Basketball Makes Top 5 for Class of 2025 guard Lena Girardi

It may be August, but Virginia Tech women's basketball coach Megan Duffy has been getting some good recruiting news. Thursday, Class of 2026 rising guard Tori Oehrlein narrowed her list down to six schools and the Minnesota native had the Hokies on the list. Now a Class of 2025 shooting guard has included Virginia Tech in her Top 5.
Talia Goodman of On3 reported that four-star Lena Girardi narrowed her list down to a Top 5 that included Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, and Arizona. If you are a baseball fan and you think that the last name Girardi sounds familiar, well, it should. She is the daughter of former New York Yankees catcher Joe who won four World Series titles combined as a player and coach.
Girardi plays at IMG Academy in Florida and according to ESPN 2025 HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings, Girardi is the 79th-ranked player in her class and not too far behind in the rankings are current Hokies' commits Amani Jenkins (No. 82) and Katie Sears (No. 85).
Girardi has been on the radar of teams over the last couple of seasons and Brandon Clay of 247Sports wrote, "Last school season, she consistently contributed alongside some of the country's top perimeter threats, showcasing her ability to excel playing off the basketball. While she attends IMG Academy in Florida during the school season, Girardi is currently competing with Empire, her home state team in New York, for her final club season. Beyond being a catch-and-shoot prospect, Girardi possesses the athleticism and skills to drive straight to the basket and create scoring opportunities.''
Girardi's father and mother are both graduates of Northwestern which might give the Wildcats an advantage in her recruiting process, but fellow ACC foe North Carolina being involved with the Hokies is going to make for an ACC recruiting battle.
