Virginia Tech vaults up CBS Sports preseason poll from end of 2023 season
By Scott Roche
The 2024 college football season is around the corner with 22 days separating us from our first games of the fall. Virginia Tech fans have to wait another 29 days to see the Hokies take the field for the first time on Aug. 31 at Vanderbilt.
Preseason award watch lists are starting to be released as are conference polls and different polls from various websites. With a ton of retainment, the Hokies are considered a dark horse in the ACC by many media members and the national media is catching on to the Hokies entering Brent Pry's third year in Blacksburg.
We are still some days away from the first major polls being released, but one website recently released its Top 134 rankings for all FBS schools and Virginia Tech was tied for the third-largest jump in the poll from the end of last season.
Virginia Tech vaults up 21 spots from end of 2023 season in CBS Sports poll
When the dust settled on the 2023 season and CBS Sports released their final college football poll of the season, Virginia Tech came in at No. 50 following a 7-6 season that was capped off with a 41-20 Military Bowl win over Tulane in December.
Fast forward seven months later and the Hokies are quickly on the rise.
CBS Sports released their first poll for the 2024 season and it included all 134 FBS schools ranked. Virginia Tech was tied with Texas A&M for the third-largest jump of 21 spots from the end of last season with the Hokies coming in at No. 29.
" The buzz around the Hokies' potential to be a dark horse in the ACC title race has reached the CBS Sports 134 voters. Virginia Tech saw a steady climb up the rankings in the back half of last year, winning six of their final eight games with each victory coming by at least 17 points. With loads of production back, Brent Pry's group will start the year knocking on the door of the top 25. "

The biggest jump was made by Miami which vaulted 31 spots up to No. 16 to begin the season and Utah went up 22 spots, one ahead of Virginia Tech and Texas A&M, up to No. 10. Who saw the third largest drop in the poll from last season? That would be Tulane, the Hokies Military Bowl opponent who dropped 32 spots to No. 62.
It would be a little surprising if the Hokies were not ranked within the Top 25 when the major polls are announced later this month.
