Going into the 2024 season, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry had a ton of retainment off of his 2023 roster. Despite getting nearly all of his production coming back, the third-year head coach added some big pieces in the transfer portal.

All the retainment is a big reason why expectations are high in Blacksburg this season and why the Hokies are considered a dark horse in the ACC race. They came in at No. 6 in the recent Preseason Poll that was released this week and it wouldn't be surprising to see them finish there or finish above that number or below.

Going into the season, there are several players who will benefit from all the retainment on the roster, and here are some that could benefit from a lot of players returning.

Aeneas Peebles

Yes, I know, Duke transfer Aeneas Peebles has yet to play a down for Virginia Tech, but he will step in and play a lot in 2024 at defensive tackle. He'll fill one of the spots there and when he does, he could potentially benefit big time from edge Antwaun Powell-Ryland returning.

Last season for the Blue Devils, Peebles had 44 tackles, 13 solo, and five sacks, but you have to think that those numbers are going to go up this season and if they don't, Powell-Ryland's numbers and 9.5 sack total from last season will. Pry is building a tough defensive line and it could be another big year in terms of sacks for Chris Marve's unit.
